Malone is a family name. From the Irish "Mael Eòin", the name means a servant or a disciple of Saint John. If this were true then it would imply that names such as Mulrooney, from the Irish "Maol Ruanaidh", mean a servant or disciple of Saint Ruanaidh. However 'ruan' is an old Irish term for the alder tree, at one time used to make red dye.[2] In the past, people named themselves- or others did- by referencing something tangible; geographic feature, physical personal feature, or position they held, etc. Further, the area of Scotland, made famous by Paul McCartney and his band WIngs, Mull of Kintyre, when translated to Irish is Maol Ceann Tir, meaning bald head land. It has no other meaning. It does not mean a follower of St.Headland! In addition, the names of the ancestors of the first Maol Eoin contain the term Maol in the patriarchal lineage- as a nod of respect to a father, in this case MaolRuanaidh, when taking a daughter in marriage - hundreds of years prior. Therefore, it is far more probable that the family originated from a landscape where there were few trees (i.e.;bald) but married someone who lived where there were trees (alder). Hence, Maol Ruan, carried over to Maol Eoin, and provides the true meaning of the name; John, a descendant of the people who came from an area with no trees. The myth of the family name deriving from 'follower' was simply a political twist on its meaning to gain greater authority, when it was clear that being aligned with the growing power of the Church was more prudent and valuable.
